Upcoming Events in WMMA & BJJ

It is blazing hot in the Bay this week, and what better way is there to celebrate the arrival of a glorious summer time than to get watch and train with some of the best fighters in the world? For those of you that live in a cave, or don’t pay attention to MMA news, now is the time to do so. There are two very exciting events just around the bend that are bound win over a few more MMA and female fight fans.

First off we have INVICTA: The World’s Permier Fight Organization for Women’s Mixed Martial Arts

The Invicta Fighting Championships are spearheaded by promotion vice president Shannon Knapp, who recently worked as head of fighter relations and in matchmaking with Strikeforce.
“The time has come for a platform dedicated exclusively to building the growing women’s division in our great sport,” Knapp said. “Invicta is committed to increasing the depth of the women’s field and building female superstars by providing women athletes with the opportunity to compete and hone their skills on a consistent basis throughout the year.” (source Sherdog.com)

Liz Carmouche vs. Ashleigh Curry
Sarah D’Alelio vs. Shana Nelson
Leslie Smith vs. Kaitlin Young
Sally Krumdiack vs. Sarah Schneider

Sarah Maloy vs. Michele Gutierrez

Ashley Cummins vs. Sofia Bagherdai
Jessica Philippus vs. Meghan Wright

If you don’t know who this ladies are, look them up because this is going to be an action packed evening and many converts will be brought over to the WMMA fold. Also stop by WMMARoundup’s Youtube channel to catch the Countdown to Invicta videos. WMMARoundup will be at the event so say hello if you are in Kansas City, KS.

Next up is Bellator 69 with the main televised fight featuring Megumi Fujii and Jessica Aguilar Friday May 18th, 2012 L’Auberge Casino – Lake Charles, LA. I am a hug Fujii fan but have a ton of respect of Jag and am super excited about this fight. A lot of WMMA fans have been eagerly awaiting this match up after the Bellator’s 115 lb. women’s tournament were Zoila Frausto came away with the championship on two controversial decision victories over Aguilar and then Fujii (her only loss in a 25-1-0 career). Many have argued that Aguilar and Fujii should have been the final title match, but now we all get to see this alternate ending come to fruition. Aguilar was slated to rematch Frausto October 2011, but Frausto suffered from a foot injury that postponed it. Aguilar was also lined up to fight Ayaka Hamasaki, Jewels Lightweight Queen champion and Fujii’s student, in her Jewel’s debut which was also cancelled due to the March 11th, 2011 earthquake.

I went this last fall to her camp and it was amazing! There were over 80 women there and we drilled and rolled for 8 hours. This is a must if you love Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Another phenomenal fighter I have had the tremendous honor of training with, and who I started off the year long travel/training adventure in 2010 at her Rio de Janeior women’s camp. In some respects, this is where I started the Female Fighter Project and ever since I have continued to document the rad women I meet along the way.

Ok so I hope that helps you plan out some new summer time fun and I look forward to seeing you on the mat.
